6 December the lecture by Clare Ford-Wille is Depiction of the Nativity in Art from Giotto to Stanley Spencer. The Nativity must be one of the most popular subjects of all with artists, north and south of the Alps and from the 13th to the 20th centuries. The lecture will explore the many variations of the scene and the possible meanings involved with the attendance or not of midwives, Joseph’s presence, either awake and active or asleep, and the varying postures and gestures of the Christ Child and the Virgin as she adores the Christ Child.
