Works Information: A27 Crossbush Interchange Resurfacing
What are we planning to do?
We are planning to resurface the A27 between the Causeway Roundabout and the Crossbush Interchange near Arundel in West Sussex.
When will work start and how long will it take?
The resurfacing work is due to start on Saturday 21 January and to be completed by Tuesday 14 February. The work is weather dependent and therefore subject to change, however we will endeavour to complete the works as close to the programmed dates as possible. Please accept our sincere apologies for the short notice for these works.
Why do we want to do this work?
The resurfacing work is being carried out to improve the road surface at this location and ensure safety for road users.
How will we carry out this work and how will it affect you?
The resurfacing work will be carried out overnight between 8pm and 6am.
From Saturday 21 January up to and including Friday 27 January, there will be a full closure of both carriageways of the A27 between Station Road and just north of Crossbush Lane. Westbound road users will be diverted south at Crossbush Interchange onto the A284 to join the A259. They will then be directed westbound through Bognor Regis to join the A29 to rejoin the A27 at Fontwell.
Eastbound road users will follow the above diversion route in reverse. Please find a map attached to show the diversion route.
Whilst the overnight closures are in place, road users will not be able to access/exit the A27 via Clay Lane. A short diversion route will be in place via Crossbush Lane to maintain access/exit.
From Saturday 28 to Tuesday 31 there will be lane closures, temporary traffic lights and a 40mph speed limit on the A27, with road users escorted past the works at 10mph and access maintained to all side roads.
From Wednesday 1 until Tuesday 14 February there will be lane closures, temporary traffic lights and a 40mph speed limit on the A27 with road users escorted past the works at 10mph. As part of this section of works, from Wednesday 1 until Friday 10 February there will be no access or exit from Queen Street onto the Causeway roundabout. Road users will need to follow a short local diversion route via Ford roundabout.
Why are the road closures needed?
The initial road closures are necessary because of the depth of resurfacing needed at this location, along with road widths being too narrow to safely allow traffic to pass the works. The closure of Queen Street’s junction with the Causeway Roundabout is necessary to give us access to this part of the roundabout whilst the works are being completed.
Why can you use lane closures for some parts of the works?
Lane closures are being used where we are resurfacing to a shallower depth and road widths are wide enough to allow traffic to safely pass the works.
How can I reach Arundel train station?
During the period when the overnight A27 closures are in place, access and exit from Arundel train station will be to the west of the station only (i.e. from the Causeway roundabout). Road users wishing to travel eastbound on the A27 from the station, or wishing to access the station from the east will need to follow the diversion route detailed above.
What arrangements will be in place for local residents and businesses within the closure area?
We will contact local residents and businesses with a letter to detail specific access arrangements for them.
Will the work be noisy?
Work of this nature does generate disruption, and inevitably a certain amount of noise. Efforts will be made to reduce noise and disruption wherever possible. We appreciate your understanding and tolerance of the works until they are completed.
Are any other works coming up at this location?
A further two schemes are being planned to be carried out in the area. The information below is in the proposal stage and therefore subject to change. However, we will ensure that communications are carried out ahead of the start of each set of works to confirm necessary details.
A27 Ford Road Roundabout Road Markings and Studs Replacement
The scheme is expected to take approximately 2 weeks of overnight works from start to completion. It will involve re-marking, refreshing and generally re-defining the existing road markings and replacing road studs on the Ford Roundabout, and some of the arms that lead to and from it. We will also be installing new sign and this will require some vegetation clearance on the westbound approach to the roundabout. Lane closures and temporary traffic lights will be used on the A27 to allow traffic to pass the works’ areas and some local road closures (on the arms of the roundabout) will be implemented. Diversion routes will be in place, full details of which will be sent out once details of the scheme are finalised.
A27 Crossbush Interchange Embankment Repair
The scheme is due to commence on 5 March and last for approximately 5 weeks.
This will involve work on two clay embankments on the verges next to the A27 westbound carriageway just before it meets the A284. Works will be carried out under a contraflow system, which will need to be in place 24 hours a day 7 days a week throughout the scheme.
The contraflow system will be constructed using lane closures before the scheme commences. Whilst the works are being carried out a short stretch of the westbound A27 carriageway, as it approaches the junction with the A284, will be closed and westbound vehicles will be diverted onto a contraflow on the eastbound carriageway. A temporary signalised T junction will be constructed at the top of the Crossbush interchange to accommodate traffic wishing to turn south onto the A284 or turn right for those wishing to continue their way on the A27. Road users from the northbound A284 will be restricted to one lane on the approach to the A27 and will join the A27 westbound towards Arundel. Those wishing to travel eastbound on the A27 towards Worthing will first travel westbound as far as the Causeway roundabout and then return on the east bound carriageway.
