Arundel Agenda 21 Meeting. - January 17th 2005
Attendees: Roland Puttock, Rita Godfrey, Pip Young, Adam Swain, Carolyn Richards, Jean Austin, Mike de Lara, Bob Musgrove, Sue Paterson, Kay Wagland, Carol Allen Chair: Pauline Halls Apologies: None 2 Matters Arising: To be covered in the body of the meeting. 3 Transport Adam invited comments for all attendees on ‘hot spot’ areas around the town to build a comprehensive picture of traffic and access issues. Sue Paterson was to contact WSCC. It was agreed to refer to this topic as ‘Access Issues’ which would include all aspects of movement. Pauline produced drawings of key areas to illustrate issues. There was a discussion on pedestrian problems around the Post Office and car parking issues as the Mill Road car park is thought to be returned to the Estate. Access Issues will be discussed in depth at the next Agenda 21 meeting. 4 Town Action Plan This is a central government initiative to develop community-owned plans for parishes. The aim will be to establish a community trust to raise funds for implementing the plan. Questions over the adequacy of publicity for the initiative and meetings were raised. There is a meeting on Tuesday 18th January at 6.30pm for new attendees. 5 Ethical Banking Details on accounts for charities and community groups had been received from the Coop Bank. Pauline and Bob would review the information and report to the next meeting. 6 Publicity Carolyn invited comments on display materials she had prepared. Some tweaking expected. She was thanked for her work. 7 Projects A27 Underpass Bob had produced a report on costings, which was circulated to the meeting. Kay reported that she had produced an application to the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation for £25,000 which would be submitted this week and would adapt this to apply to other grant-giving charitable trusts (including the Carnegie UK Trust). Schools Exchange Through experience, Pauline felt that dealing with 2 classes (one from each primary school) was too much to handle and suggested that the project should now be limited to the Christchurch (London) school visit. It was thought that there was insufficient ‘cultural exchange’ in the schools link. The Arundel schools are not participating as promised and leaving too much to A21. It was suggested that a video might be produce, eg of a children’s view of Arundel. Pauline and Pip to meet to review the future of the project. Bus Trips Pauline reported that these had been very successful and were financially viable. A21 had paid for a Christmas lunch at the George and Dragon, Burpham. Trips are booked to the end of June. Hurrah. 8 AOB Thanks were given to Arundel Town Council for providing a grant to allow A21 to continue meeting at the Town Hall. Car Seat Testing: Jean Austin reported that the Fire Service (WSCC) are planning to provide this service at major town centres. This will normally preclude tests in Arundel. It was agreed that A21 will wait to see if this is adequate and will suggest that the Ford Road station could provide the service on their occasional open days (particularly during the festival). Arun District is running a Waste and Recycling Forum. Pauline and Bob will attend to see if there is anything that A21 might usefully take forward. Common Ground had provided a sample poster that parishes are encouraged to produce on local distinctiveness. It had been suggested that we might produce one along similar lines, with opportunities for different people to contribute individual elements. We might produce an ‘alternative Arundel’ poster. This will be pursued at a separate creative meeting and be on the March A21 agenda. Next meetings: February 21st 2005 – Main item: Access (Transport) March 21st – Main item: Local distinctiveness poster April 18th Trees: • draw water into the ground, refilling aquifers and reducing flooding • produce oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide • take pollution particles out of the air • provide food and habitat for birds and beneficial insects • provide shade and shelter • provide food and materials for humans • are beautiful… !
